One of the first lines of spherical drum roasting machines, Alex van Gülpen and Theodor von Gimborn (Germany) jointly produced the "Emmerich spherical coffee roaster" in 1870, but it was not until 1874 that the patent was granted. With the invention of the Kaffeeschnellröster ('quick coffee roaster'), an era of innovation began. This patent was important to the revolutionary development of the drum roaster.

The basic principle of the drum rotating along a horizontal axis remains the most popular slow roasting method of coffee used today. The machine frame is firmly designed with iron, the black spherical roasting cage is attached by iron bars. The drum-shaped roaster has a built-in lid and iron buttons around the body, manufactured in the most advanced style of that period. This type of roaster is similar to the spherical coffee roaster still used in Vietnam today.
